Hygienic camping: How to stay so fresh and so green

When it comes to camping and hygiene, there are only two things you need to know. One:  Hats and bandanas work wonders when it comes to covering greasy hair. Two:  Everyone is going to get dirty; embrace it.  If you’re having a hard time accepting either of these facts, fear not. It is possible to be a clean camper while following Unravel’s earth-friendly style of traveling.  Take a look at this list of products that will help you stay clean and green.

Body Soap

A variety of organic soaps can be found at your local natural foods store or at many major retail and camping supply stores (such as Target or REI in the U.S. or MEC in Canada). Since these soaps are made from natural ingredients, they are easier for the earth to break down than soaps containing unnatural chemicals. Dr. Bronner’s Pure Castile is a top choice among organic soaps. When choosing between the liquid soap and the bar soap, go for the bar. It has less packaging, making it more eco-friendly and easier to carry while camping.

Shampoo

Not into greasy hair? You always have the option of using body soap to clean those lovely locks, but if you’d rather use shampoo go with Garnier Fructis Pure and Clean.  This shampoo is 94% biodegradable and can be found wherever shampoo is sold.

If you don’t mind spending a little more, you can find organic shampoos in the same place you bought your soap. Check out your local whole foods store or major retail store for earth-friendly shampoos. You can Burt’s Bees makes a variety of shampoos that are among the top-rated natural hair products.

Toothpaste

When it comes to big name-brand toothpastes, companies seem to be more concerned about healthy teeth and gums than a healthy environment (go figure). But you can cut out many of the unnecessary chemicals found in toothpaste by brushing with baking soda.  Yes, take the advice of the grandma in the Colgate commercials and just use baking soda. This is an effective and environmentally friendly way to maintain those pearly whites.

If you’re craving more than baking soda, you can look for Tom’s of Maine toothpaste at your local whole foods store or larger convenient store. Tom’s makes a variety of organic toothpastes sure to satisfy your craving for minty, fresh breath.

Laundry Detergent

If you’re going on a long camping trip or just enjoy wearing clean clothes, Clorox’s Green Works laundry detergent is a great choice. This detergent can be found at your local convenience store and is 98% biodegradable.

10 Overlooked Essentials to pack for your Colorado camping trip

Whether you’re planning a trip on your own or one of Unravel’s Colorado Camping trips, here are 10 things you’ll definitely be glad to have packed while camping in the Colorado Rocky Mountains this summer!

10. Rain gear

While the climate is typically arid, Colorado does get quite a few rainstorms in the summer. Storms come unbelievably quickly in the mountains and the rain is COLD!

9. Warm clothes

Even in the summer, temperatures can drop quite a bit at night! At the very least bring a heavy fleece/sweater and a hat.

8. A good map

Before you set out, be sure you know where you’re going. If you bring a camera take a few pictures of the map at the trailhead.

7. Your Common Sense

There are no straight lines in the mountains; assume it will take longer to get than you might expect. The terrain and wildlife may be different than what you’re used to- do your homework beforehand. Always err on the side of caution.

6. Duct Tape

Can solve so many problems in life. Enough said.

5. Dental Floss

Oral hygiene isn’t always a top priority when in the backcountry, but there is nothing more annoying than something caught in your teeth! On top of this, it is so strong and great for repairing just about anything that needs to be sewn, repaired or tied up!

4. Multi-tool knife with bottle opener and/or cork screw

Depending on your libation needs!

3. Extra food

Bring more than you need- your trip might take longer than you’ve planned or you might find the perfect place and decide you just need to stay a couple extra days. Either way, a lack of food can quickly turn your situation into a survival scenario!

2. Secondary fire source

If you normally pack matches, bring a lighter too. If you’ve packed a lighter, be sure to throw in some waterproof matches. A fire can keep you fed, warm, drinking clean water, and safe; make sure you can get one started should you need to!

1. Bandanna

In the late 1970s Douglas Adams had this to say about towels in The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy: “… a towel has immense psychological value. For some reason, if a strag (strag: nonhitchhiker) discovers that a hitchhiker has his towel with him, he will automatically assume that he is also in possession of a toothbrush, washcloth, soap, tin of biscuits, flask, compass, map, ball of string, gnat spray, wet-weather gear, space suit etc., etc. Furthermore, the strag will then happily lend the hitchhiker any of these or a dozen other items that the hitchhiker might accidentally have ‘lost’. What the strag will think is that any man who can hitch the length and breadth of the galaxy, rough it, slum it, struggle against terrible odds, win through, and still knows where his towel is, is clearly a man to be reckoned with.”

This is kind of how I feel about bandannas. They can be used for so many things (face mask, eye mask, pot holder, water strainer, bandage, flag, snot rag, etc.) and you can always tell that someone in the wilderness with a well used bandanna knows what they’re doing.

Trip Notes- Travel School: Mexico & Guatemala

Introduction

Welcome to Unravel’s Experiences of a Lifetime! Want to learn how to travel nearly anywhere in the world? Would you like to see some of the best parts of southern Mexico and Guatemala? Join us for this ‘classroom on the road’ to learn all the skills you will need to forever say goodbye to the tour group and hello to the open road!

Trip Style

You can expect a small group of up to 12 travelers with some included activities and meals, but also time to explore or relax on your own. We stay in simple, locally owned guesthouses, bed’n’breakfasts, hostels, hotels, and campgrounds. We take all sorts of local transportation to get around.  This trip is about variety: the places, the people,  and the activities we participate in. While on the road we will focus on teaching our fellow travelers about how to travel smartly, safely, and sustainably!

Trip Map

Itinerary

One important part of this travel course is planning; this happens both before one boards their flight, and on-the-ground as-it-happens. This itinerary outlines the pre-trip planning. There is considerable flexibility for improvisation; this is intended so we can be in the moment and make the most of our travel opportunities!

The routes, activities and places visited described in these Trip Notes are intentions and are meant as a guide only. Outstanding circumstances may still require itinerary changes to be made up to trip start and during the trip.

Days 1-5 – Cancun, Tulum, Chichen Itza, Merida

A true traveler gets off the beaten path, and we’ll leave tourist-stricken Cancun ASAP to really get into the heart of Mexico. So if it’s Cancun beach time you need, make sure to come a few days early!

We’ll meet in the morning and head out- first to Tulum, a chance to enjoy a pristine Caribbean beach, explore local Mayan ruins, snorkel, and get your adventure on! It’s not all sun and fun here, we’ll also have an opportunity to cover the essentials or traveling safely in a new place.

Afterwards we’re off to the remarkable Mayan ruins at Chichen Itza, where we’ll learn the value of visiting a country’s historic sites, but also how best experience them without feeling like a herded animal!

Onwards from here to the beautiful “White City” of Merida. Though tourists come here, you will feel an immediate difference here from Cancun, will realize you’ve entered a true Mexico and learn more about how to get deeper into the local culture!

Days 6-9 – Palenque, San Cristobal da las Casas

Off we go to the southwest part of the nation to visit Chiapas state and the phenomenal ruins of Palenque. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is know for its intricate and well preserved architecture dating back to 100B.C. Only approximately 25% of the site has been excavated from jungle overgrowth! In addition to developing our Tomb Raider skills, we’ll also get to experience the jungle, and enjoy a visit to the magnificent Aguas Azules!

Next we head to the quaint city of San Cristobal de las Casas. There is a strong artistic community here and many skill artesians have moved here from the countryside. This makes the perfect setting to hone our local market negotiating skills.

On this section of the trip we also focus on transportation. We’ll get around by foot, taxi, collectivo, express bus, and even overnight bus. We’ll cover how to find out how to get from A to B, what to consider before booking, and how to travel safely and within your budget!

Days 10-15 – Guatemala, Lake Atitlan, Antigua

And off we head to Guatemala, the famous Lake Atitlan, and the fabulous tourist hub of Antigua. Here we’ll gain valuable experience in dealing with border crossings, dealing with money changers,  and noticing subtle cultural and lingual differences in a new country.

As we explore a couple of the highlights of Guatemala we’ll hone our skills on choosing and negotiating accommodations, and figure out how to choose a local operator and if you even need one. Once in Antigua we’ll have a chance to recap what we’ve learn, finalize our own plans for our onward journeys, and spend one last night as a group!

All good things must come to an end, but after all these adventures, you ‘re sure to feel confident and able to do it all on your own. And if, after all you’ve learned, you’ve realized you just prefer the fun and simplicity of traveling with a group, you’ll know that Unravel Travel will be around for your next adventure!

Culture Shock Rating

If you are an avid outdoors-person and have traveled to other developing nations before,  you will have a good sense of what to expect. If these activities are new to you, you should know that we will be traveling to remote, but typically safe areas of Mexico and Guatemala. Food will be tasty and healthy, and dietary needs will be taken into account, but selection and variety may not be what you you are used to back home. Transportation, accommodation, and sanitation is also quite different than you may be familiar with, but be assured that safety is our number one concern.

Should any issue occur while you are on your trip it is imperative that you discuss this with your group leader straight away so that they can do their best to rectify the problem and save any potential negative impact on the rest of your trip.

We recognize that there may be times when your group leader may not be able to resolve a situation to your satisfaction – if this is the case please ask the leader if you may speak to their direct manager.

Please be aware that it is very difficult for us to provide any practical help after the trip is complete.

Health

All Unravel travelers need to be in good physical health in order to participate fully in the group travel experience. If in the opinion of our group leader or company representative any traveler is unable to complete the itinerary without undue risk to themselves and/or the rest of the group, Unravel reserves the right to exclude them from all or part of a trip without refund. We therefore ask that you read the itinerary in these trip notes thoroughly and then realistically self-assess your physical ability to complete the trip as described. Please consult with your doctor if you have any doubts.

We recommend that you carry a First Aid kit as well as any personal medical requirements. Please be aware that we are in remote areas and away from medical facilities for some time during this trip, and for legal reasons leaders/guides are prohibited from administering any type of drug including headache tablets, antibiotics, etc.

If you have a pre-existing medical condition, please make sure you discuss it with your doctor and be aware of the way altitude may exacerbate your condition.

Safety

Your leader will accompany you on all included activities however during your trip you will have some free time to pursue your own interests, relax and take it easy or explore at your leisure. While your group leader will assist you with the available options in a given location, please note that any optional activities you undertake are not part of your Unravel itinerary, and Unravel makes no representations about the safety of the activity or the standard of the operators running them. Please use your own good judgment when selecting an activity in your free time. Please also note that your group leader has the authority to amend or cancel any part of the trip itinerary if it is deemed necessary due to safety concerns.

We also recommend that you check before departure that your travel insurance is valid for travel in these regions.

Travel Insurance
Travel insurance is compulsory for all our trips. We require that, at a minimum, you are covered for medical expenses including emergency repatriation. We strongly recommend that the policy also covers personal liability, cancellation, curtailment and loss of luggage and personal effects.

When traveling on a group trip, you will not be permitted to join the group until evidence of travel insurance and the insurance company’s 24 hour emergency contact number has been seen by your leader.

If you have credit card insurance your tour leader will require details of the participating insurer/underwriter, the level of coverage, policy number and emergency contact telephone number rather than the Bank’s name and credit card details. Please contact your bank for these details prior to arriving in country.

Please go to www.insuremytrip.com or www.worldnomads.com for links to various travel insurance providers.

Your Fellow Travelers

As you travel on a group trip you will be exposed to all the pleasures and maybe some of the frustrations of traveling in a group. Your fellow travelers will probably come from all corners of the world and likely a range of age groups too. We ask you to be understanding of the various needs and preferences of your group – patience with your fellow travelers is sometimes required for the benefit of everyone’s travel experience. Remember too that you have responsibilities to the group. If you are requested to be at a place at a certain time, ensure that you don’t keep the rest of the group waiting. We have found time and time again that the very best trips we operate are those where the dynamics within the group work well – this takes just a little effort on your part.

Please note that due to privacy reasons we are unable to provide you with contact details and any personal information about your fellow travelers booked on your trip prior to departure.

Age restrictions apply to this trip: minimum age 18, maximum age 70

Responsible Travel

We believe strongly in positive impact tourism. Broadly speaking this means that we try to minimize the negative aspects of tourism on the local cultures and environments that we visit and highlight the positive aspects.

A Couple of Rules

While our trips are very flexible and accepting to local customs, there are a few things that will not be tolerated on Unravel trips due to their legality, how they may put other travelers or Unravel staff at risk, or are fundamentally against our responsible travel code. Any traveler possessing or using illegal drugs, participating in prostitution or engaging in acts of violence will be immediately removed from the trip. Our group leader has the right to expel any member of the group for making these offenses, and refunds to the trip will not be granted.

It is your adventure and we are here to take the fuss out of it!

Trip Map

Sample map itinerary

Itinerary

The routes, activities and places visited described in these Trip Notes are intentions and are meant as a rough guide only. Camping trips may vary depending on many factors, but will be finalized upon booking. Outstanding circumstances may still require itinerary changes to be made up to trip start and during the trip.

Day 1 – Arrive Denver

Welcome to Colorado and the Mile High City! Everyone arrives at different times today, so take the time to relax, get acclimated to the altitude, or set out on an adventure. There will be a group meeting in the early afternoon and then an opportunity to get your first taste of Colorado! Depending on trip date and availability we will either beat the heat at a waterslide park or take in a Rockies baseball game at Coors Field. All this gives the opportunity to have an authentic Colorado experience and will give you some time to get used to the altitude before we head up into the mountains! Hotels are at your discretion so that you may choose what suits you best. We recommend something downtown and can be of further assistance upon your request. We’ll be around all day today if you have any questions.

Days 2-5 – Backcountry camping

On the morning of Day 2 we’ll meet early and do a gear check to make sure that everyone has suitable clothing and gear for our adventure in the mountains. From there we will proceed with a short drive followed by our first opportunity to do a hike- a short and not too strenuous walk. In addition to providing spectacular views, this will provide us the opportunity to stretch our legs and truly feel what its like to hike at altitude.

After grandiose views from Mt. Evans we’ll have a nice picnic lunch and continue on to our campsite in the heart of the Rockies in central Colorado. This is participatory camping, so we’ll all work and learn together to build camp- pitch tents, prepare meals, assemble ‘smores, and ‘rough’ it in one of the most beautiful parts of the U.S.

Once we reach our destination we will all work together to set up camp. This is both a rewarding and enabling experience and can be quite fun. We camp at a simple location with few amenities. There will be toilets and basic showers. Campers will sleep in water-proof tents for 2-4 people and families. We will cook meals over camp-stoves (everyone is welcome to help), and will have campfires where permissible.

Our itinerary over the following days will vary due to conditions, but our leaders work hard to ensure you have the best experience possible. Our days will be filled with hikes and nature walks, as well as a fully day rafting trip. Our leader will share fun camp activities and crafts with children to make this an entertaining and learning experience.

Day 5 – Back to Denver

All good things must come to an end, but after all these adventures most people are happy to return to civilization and often have a new-found appreciation for all the luxuries of everyday life.

This is real camping, not some hokey faux-luxury tour package tour. We will need to break camp at the end of our trip and your help is needed. You said you wanted to camp right?! Well breaking down camp is part of it, and we’ll all need to work together to pack the tents and the kitchen. Fortunately that is where it ends for you; our leaders will do all the real dirty work later.

We’ll arrive back to Denver in the early afternoon and we will drop you off at the hotel of your choice or we can take you directly to the airport.

Whether you’re avid campers that want a no-fuss vacation, or a first-time campers looking for a new experience, we’re sure you’ll leave with a heap of stories, memories, pictures and new friends!

Issues On Your Trip

While we always endeavor to provide the best possible experience, due to the nature of travel and the areas we visit sometimes things can and do go wrong.

Age restrictions apply to this trip: minimum age 6, maximum age 70

Trip Notes- Colorado Backcountry Trip

Introduction

Welcome to Unravel’s Experiences of a Lifetime! Want to experience the Rocky Mountains of Colorado as they were intended? Join us to explore this grand mountain range, camp in nature, take in sunsets, hike scenic trails, and really get off the beaten path and into the backcountry of Colorado, and sample some of Colorado’s legendary brews? All this and more as Unravel Travel takes you off the beaten path in the Colorado Rockies with their small group, participatory camping trip Colorado Backcountry Trip!

Trip Style

You can expect a small group of like-minded travelers with some included activities and meals, but also time to explore or relax on your own. We practice Leave No Trace camping at established sites with basic  to no facilities. These trips are about variety: the places, the people,  and the activities we participate in. It is your adventure and we are here to take the fuss out of it!

Trip Map

Itinerary

The routes, activities and places visited described in these Trip Notes are intentions and are meant as a rough guide only. Backcountry itineraries will vary depending on many factors, but will be finalized upon booking. Outstanding circumstances may still require itinerary changes to be made up to trip start and during the trek.

Day 1 – Arrive Denver

Welcome to Colorado and the Mile High City! Everyone arrives at different times today, so take the time to relax, get acclimated to the altitude, or set out on an adventure. There will be a group meeting this evening and then an opportunity to get your first taste of Colorado! Depending on trip date and availability we will spend the evening either going to a Rockies baseball game at Coors Field or have the opportunity to check out  several of Colorado’s great breweries, some renowned, others bound to be the next great hit.

This is participatory camping, so we”l all work and learn together to build camp- pitch tents, prepare meals, assemble ‘smores, and ‘rough’ it in one of the most beautiful parts of the U.S.

Depending on the particular itinerary and how remote the area, we will either camp at the trailhead or in the backcountry this first night of camping. From here we set off into the wilderness on challenging and rewarding hikes with all our own gear. While physical abilities of those within the group may vary, we will work together as a team to hike safely. Remember we have all day to get to our next camp, there is no rush in nature!

Day 5 – Back to Denver

All good things must come to an end, but after all these adventures most people are happy to return to civilization and often have a new-found appreciation for all the luxuries of everyday life.

This is real camping, not some hokey faux-luxury tour package tour. We need to break  and make camp every day and your help is needed.

Whether you’re and avid camper that wants a no-fuss vacation, or a first-timer looking for a new experience, we’re sure you’ll leave with a heap of stories, memories, pictures and new friends!

Itinerary Disclaimer

This itinerary may be updated during the year to incorporate improvements stemming from past travelers’ comments and our own research. As such, the information given in this itinerary may be slightly different to the final copy of the Trip Notes that will be released to you shortly before your trip commences. For the latest updated trip notes please visit our website: www.unravel-travel.com

Culture Shock Rating

If you are an avid outdoors-person and have done your share of leave-no-trace camping and hiking, then you will know what to expect. If these activities are new to you, you should know that we are traveling to remote areas in the wilderness; there are no easy ways out and once you have committed to this you will have to carry your own weight in and out. Food will be tasty and healthy, and dietary needs will be taken into account when booking, but selection and variety may not be what you can expect while in civilization. Sanitation is also quite different than you may be familiar with. Usually there are no toilets, sinks or showers. You may be able to bathe and wash up in streams or mountain lakes, but they may also not be accessible. You will be expected to use proper toilet practices in the wilderness including digging holes and covering your own waste.

That being said, these are all typical experiences of human nature and proper Leave No Trace procedures when in the wilderness. Not only does everyone survive this, but most quite enjoy these practices once they get used to them!

Physical Rating

These trips are physical by nature- you will be expected to carry all of your own personal gear plus your share of the groups equipment- expect your backpack to weigh 1/3 of your body weight. We will be hiking everyday at high altitudes- you can expect up to 7 miles a day, some of which may be above the tree-line.

Everyone’s perception of being in shape is different. Be realistic about yours and give us a call to discuss the details before you book!

Issues On Your Trip

While we always endeavor to provide the best possible experience, due to the nature of travel and the areas we visit sometimes things can and do go wrong.

Single Travelers

Our group trips are designed for shared accommodation and do not typically involve a single supplement. Single travelers share with people of the same sex for the duration of the trip, in accommodation ranging from twin to multi-share. Please note that this only applies to accommodation during the tour. Pre- and post-trip accommodation will be booked on a private room basis.

A unique Antarctic experience

A great article in the New York Times depicting a unique way to experience Antarctica- by work and play. This is where I worked in 2009-2010 and remains the only 1/2 marathon I’ve run. Don’t miss my friend Meghan in the striped socks and  my former ride- Ivan the Terra Bus.

If you interested to see more, check out the controversial and weird film Encounters at the End of the World by Werner Herzog.

Unidos da Tijuca

Founded: 1931
Colors: Yellow Gold and Blue Peacock
Theme for 2011:  “Tonight take your soul”
Website:  www.unidosdatijuca.com.br
Performing:  Sunday, March 6th, 2011 12:15am

Unidos da Tijuca is Rio de Janeiro’s third oldest school and last years champion. They have quite a bit of pride and also a lot of pressure as they defend their title in 2011. Hopefully their theme “Tonight take your soul,” paying homage to horror films will grab the attention they need!

And on a side note, probably one the Tijuca doesn’t want to remember: Check out the video below. At the Parade of Champions 2007, while in attendance, I witnessed their float catch on fire! As far as I know, no one was hurt, but it turned out to be quite a spectacle… and how ironic that the devil is the float that catches fire?!

2010 Finish: 2nd place

Grande Rio is one of the youngest samba schools in Rio de Janeiro, and quickly became one of the most celebrated and successful! Last year found them in 2nd place, so this year they will undoubtedly want to repeat their performance and make claim for the title again!

Samba Theme Lyrics ~ Samba Enredo 2011

Y-JURERÊ MIRIM…
Meu paraíso… Que maravilha!
Foi Deus quem fez assim
Com todo encanto… Essa magia
Entre contos e lendas
Quanta imaginação
Celebrando a natureza
Rituais de gratidão
Eu também sou carijó
É bendito o meu lugar
Rezei forte… Nesse chão
Sai pra lá assombração
Já peguei meu patuá

Caldeirão vai ferver
A Grande Rio chegou
Vem trazer pra você
Uma poção de amor
É a receita que a bruxinha ensinou

O folclore é tradição
Valorizando a cultura popular
O canto… A dança
O sagrado e o profano
Minha ilha encantada
Vivo te admirando
Beleza… Riqueza
Repousando sobre o mar
Santuário pra sonhar

Meu Rio te abraça… Floripa tão bela
A tua história virou carnaval
Essa ponte é a luz na passarela
É obra-prima… Esse cartão postal
